The Ashland County Land & Water Conservation Department provides technical assistance to landowners for:

  • Conservation planning & watershed analysis
  • Nutrient Management plan development
  • Conservation practice design
  • Restoration of shorelands along lakes and streams
  • Erosion control recommendations
  • Stormwater management
  • Passage of aquatic organisms through road crossings
  • Establishment of "non-traditional" forestry practices
  • Fish and wildlife habitat restoration or enhancement
  • Youth and adult environmental education
  • Invasive species inventories, control, monitoring, and education

Ashland County Farmland Preservation Plan

Programs & Emphasis:

 

Soil and Water Resource Management Cost-Share 

  • Financial assistance for landowners implementing projects with conservation-based practices.

Native Tree & Shrub Sale

  • Annual sale that encourages establishment of native species while meeting a demand for low priced trees and shrubs.

Environmental Education Programs

  • Improve your conservation and outdoor education skills through the Student Conservation Camp, Poster Contest, and Speaking Contest.

Wildlife Damage Abatement and Claims Program

  • Compensates qualified commercial agriculture producers for damage caused by deer, bear, geese, and turkey.

Invasive Species Program

  • Preventing, containing, and controlling terrestrial and aquatic invasive species through inventories, control, and education.

Nutrient Management Planning

  • Provides cost-share funds to develop and implement plans for all farmers who mechanically apply manure or commercial fertilizer to cropland.

Farmland Preservation Program

  • Aims to identify and protect agricultural areas against unplanned development while providing tax relief to land owners in the program.

 No-Till Drill Rental Program

  • Provides a reasonably priced service for agricultural producers who wish to implement no-till practices in the Lake Superior watershed and to protect soil and water quality while improving efficiency on the farm.
